The new and upgraded roadways are necessary through the region, to link a growing Europe and provide infrastructure for transport.
But it is important to not start building works to bring sections of road up to expressway standard until the proper Strategic Environmental Assessment has been carried out, to ensure the best and least damaging route, and the one which will cause the least harm to fragile biodiversity.
In 2004 the Polish Government made a commitment to choose the route of the European Transport Corridor I “Via Baltica” only after conducting Strategic Environment Assessment. This was based on the Bern Convention recommendations, and as such should be binding. But it now seems that they are bulldozing through their decision without the correct planning, and this must stop now!
