Map of possible alternative variant

There are several alternative routes (see map) for transit traffic travelling from Warsaw to the Polish-Lithuanian border. In one alternative backed by Polish environmental NGOs, the route can cross the city of Lomza, which would not only be a shorter route but would also bypass the designated Natura 2000 sites. This existing road (no. 61) is also being modernised under the EU funds but with lower technical parameters than are required for the international standard Via Baltica. It has been closed to heavy lorry transit for a few years, and all transit traffic is currently directed via road no. 8, threatening the most valuable nature areas in the region.

Via Baltica - what is the fuss about?
